Antique Small Wood Music Box, Marquetry Inlay, Cylinder & Comb
ANTIQUE SMALL WOOD MUSIC BOX, MARQUETRY INLAY, CYLINDER & COMB. This listing is for an antique, small wood wooden music box (no identifying marks on the piece except the initials “HT” on the brass comb board). The outside of the lid has marquetry inlay with a double inner border and a center image of a musical French? Horn with oak leaves & acorns. The lid is attached with a broad, secure hinge. The inside base holds the music box mechanism made of a 3-1/2 long cylinder and a comb. There are 2 top edge trim pieces missing from the inside of the box (left and right that held a piece of glass that covered the works). The bottom has been reglued and shows some surface damage (see photos). There is a round 1-/4 diameter hole in the bottom for key access to the mechanism (key included, not original). When I wind the mechanism, I hear ratcheting inside the drum but the shaft is turning inside the small brass wheel- out of round on top of the drum that meets with the steel wheel next to it. That winds the drum. I can put a little pressure on the outside wheel and the cylinder turns and plays a tune. I can’t name that song. The comb when remove show that it is in very good condition, one tooth on the far left is missing. The cylinder drum looks in good condition as well. Besides the makers initials stamped in to brass frame, someone marked the frame that it was restored in 1976. The movement is held in place by two small screws that have almost pull through the bottom of the box and needs to be addressed. There are two mother of pearl slides, one on the left side that looks the movement and one on the front that is an on and off switch. There is also a brass push that opens the top lid. The box measures approx. 5-5/8″ BY 3-1/4″ BY 1-7/8 high. The 12 Westcott Wooden ruler being used, is for size comparison of items listed and is not for sale and not included with the item.
