DATED 1876 (8) SONG SWISS 13 LONG CYLINDER MUSIC BOX W/ LYRE/ HARP & INLAID VILLAGE SCENE ON THE TOP LID OF THE MUSIC BOX CASE. A wonderfully fully working EIGHT (8) “AIRS” (SONG) SWISS made MUSIC BOX w/ Fancy Lyre topped sound enhancing bar. All reeds are present however 3 of the reed combs have their thin hair-wide fine tips broken off (SEE PHOTO DETAIL regarding this), but this does not affect the playability of all of the EIGHT (8) outstanding. Songs that this beautiful music box plays. WITH’LYRE / HARP’ (with red painted embellishment) ACCENTED METAL SOUND BAR. Case is 23″ WIDE x 6 1/2″ TALL x 9 1/2 DEEP. The lid on the right has a surface crack in the veneer that goes from the right edge in to about 7 and is hardly, if at all noticeable. The wooden side guard on the left side with the winding lever pulls up to wind is cracked in half and has remnants of an old glue repair. Either way, when the wood is in position, the break is not a big issue. The music box plays well and has great sound. It may need oiling or whatever, as the’governor vanes’ need to be spin started with the push of a finger in some but not all cases. But pushing the small brass release lever below the’governor vanes’ often gets the vanes spinning and the music and and playing. The two l evers to the right also work and appear to do something, like change the tone, but we aren’t really sure. The often chipped SONG LIST label as is on this box has old heavy backing paper behind it that preserves the old chipped-up label wonderfully. Over-all a better than average Swiss music box. SIGNIFICANTLY , THIS MUSIC BOX WON TWO MEDALS at the 1876 PHILADELPHIA CENTERNNIAL EXPO in 1876 and the lithographed and hand annotated “AIRS” SONG LIST label tacked to the inside lid shows this award. See photos herein regarding this detail. Wear, scratches and other imperfections is consistent with age and use but essentially clean. Please see all photos as they are part of the description.
