Large 19thc Thorens Lap Crank Music Box with Scene Fairly large for this type of crank music box. It plays very well, appears to be two songs with a larger then average number of notes. It is a sealed wood box (no apparent way to open except removal of nails), with a single hand crack. Has a “speaker opening” on the front side. Top has a paper scene attached with English? Colonial dressed couple, woman descending stairs, and man retrieving a shuttlecock from water from a game of badminton. Although not marked the remaining label on the bottom seems to match those used by Thorens. A QUESTION WE RECEIVED (10/28): Don’t suppose you could put it on your letter scale and see how much it weighs? Reason I ask is that I have an identical 1-tune Thorens one (also English-themed) that weighs about 15oz and also an Irish-themed 50-noter with 4-tunes that weighs almost 2 lbs. The weight would give me (and other watchers) an idea as to the cylinder diameter and comb sizes. The Irish-themed 50-noter has a 2-1/2 diameter cylinder, which of course makes it more desirable that the ones with smaller cylinders and shorter combs. Yours has the same label as my Irish-themed one, so of course I just had to ask about weight. I’ve identified three different Thorens labels for these child’s organ grinder boxes. Yours is the oldest era and it should have had a leather strap vs the fabric strap used on the later era ones. When estimating age, keep in mind also that use of wire nails (vs square-cut) began in US about 1892. OUR ANSWER:, the box weighs 2 lbs 4 oz. It has no strap but there are nail holes on each side from where it was attached. The only visible nails are the ones through the top and they are round. Thanks for the important information.
