MIRA “MIRAPHONE” DISK MUSIC BOX & PHONOGRAPH ” ABSOLUTELY SUPERB CONDITION “. As you know, the Swiss were the pioneers and virtual monopolizers of the music box industry throughout the 19th century. Their dominance in the manufacture and distribution of cylinder music boxes was legendary. But, later on, the Germans came up with a competing format , the disk music box, that threw the Swiss for a loop. Mermod Freres of St. Croix, Switzerland, who had a long history as watchmakers, and of the maker of fine cylinder music boxes, entered the fray with designs of their own. The Stella music box, for instance, featured disks without projections. But Stellas did not have the volume or resonance to effectively compete against Polyphons or Symphonions, so Mermod brought out their “Mira” line, with full volume and dynamic sound that had no equal. To this day, experts agree, the finest-sounding disk music boxes, size for size, are Miras. As phonographs started to overtake music boxes as the primary form of home entertainment, the important makers tried to incorporate phonographs and created “hybrid” machines such as this. Unfortunately, the popularity of phonographs was so great as to drive the music box makers out of business by the early 1920’s. We are offering this exceptional rarity, produced in very small numbers in the 1910’s. Plays size 12 Mira metal music disks, of which we have 12 to include. The phonograph components (actually made by Columbia for Mira) comprise a “front-mount setup and a 10″ record turntable. The music box is a double-comb type, with no missing or broken teeth and no damper squeaks. The sound is strong and resonant. The music box/phonograph sits atop a rich, matching mahogany cabinet and will house both your disks and records. Music box/phonograph: 21″ wide x 18″ deep x 10 high. Base cabinet: 22″ wide x 19″ deep x 33 high. Horn: 14″ diameter x 23″ long. We will also include a tin of needles, and a box of records, to get you going immediately. This comes from our personal collection, and we have enjoyed it for many years. You will be absolutely thrilled to own such a fine, historic instrument.
