REGINA “PEPSIN” GUM DISPENSER. We are pleased to offer a very special music box that rarely, if ever, comes up for sale. It is known as a Style 18, with Serial #67024 dating it to about 1902. According to Bower’s Encyclopedia, only about 49 of these were ever made. The music box plays size 12.25 disks, and on the drop of a nickel inserted into the slide, the music begins to play. A few seconds later, a stick of gum is dispensed to the cup at the front. The music automatically ends at the play of a disk. Three disks are included. The single-comb mechanism is in perfect order, with no broken teeth or tips and no damper squeaks. The gum dispensing mechanism also works as it should. It utilizes a standard-size gum, 3 x. “Pepsin” is not a brand, rather a flavor additive to gum. We have substituted a brand called “Clove”. To reload the dispenser, one releases a catch and tilts the rack outward, and then drop the sticks of gum in. There are weights to apply downward pressure on the top of the gum stack to help avoid jamming. The oak case, with original finish, measures 16″ wide x 11″ deep x 30 high. This is very heavy, weighing about 65 lbs. The upper gallery and Regina decal are original and in great condition. The front glass appears to be a replacement, and the coin slot has been changed some time in the past from the original penny to a nickel slide. Otherwise everything else appears original and mint. Both original locks, with a key, are in working condition. This comes from the estate of a major collector who only collected the best and the rarest. This is a very special music box and the only one we’ve ever had the pleasure of owning.
