SYMPHONION “ROCOCO” MUSIC BOX. Around 1885, Symphionion Musikwerke of Leipzig, Germany, brought the first disk music boxes to market, simultaneously introducing to the world a method of making music of virtually unlimited variety, and thus hastening the decline and fall of the Swiss cylinder box makers. Then, of course, Thomas Edison and others eclipsed everybody with their phonographs, which could add voices to the equation. By 1910 or so, music box makers were consigned to history. Symphonion was known for making a tremendous variety of styles to house their instruments: chalets, clocks, banks, etc. This elaborate “rococo” case was known as a Style 25c, produced in limited numbers; we have seen only a very few over the years. The “sublime harmonie” twin combs play size 25cm. We will supply 20 original disks with the music box. The elaborately carved case measures 21″ wide x 17″ deep. There are some very minor, virtually undetectable, moldings on the lower edge that have suffered slight separations, probably due to people lifting the music box incorrectly. But overall, the condition is just wonderful, especially when you consider that this is about 140 years old. The original lid picture is surrounded with green velvet. This plays great, and there are no broken comb teeth or other issues. The speed control works, there is a stop-start switch on the left, and the original winding crank is furnished.
