This movement imitated the motions of birds and reproduced it’s “birdsong” very authentically. It contained leather bellows and piston whistle assemblies. About 60 years later the bird movement was perfected by the Blaise Bontems workshop in Paris, France. Blaise Bontems (1814 – 1893) was a noted Parisian specialist in the manufacture of automaton singing birds and the first of a dynasty of automaton manufacturers, which included his son Charles Jules and his grandson Lucien. Bontems’ birds were famous for the realism of their song. In 1960 Reuge took over Bontems as well as Eschle’s production in Germany. The acquisition insured that the 200 year old tradition would be safeguarded. To this day Reuge continues the manufacture of singing birds, in the traditional manner. Birds are painstakingly feathered by hand and meticulously assembled, piece by piece. 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEED – OVER 2000 FEEDBACK. Item must return in the same condition that we send. Beautiful antique Ward-Stilson Co. 9584, manufactured in Anderson, Indiana and dating to the early 20th century, likely circa 1910s-1920s. This unusual mechanical harp contains a wind-up music-box mechanism. It is working: after winding, moving the control lever starts the music and moving it back stops it. It will play for several minutes from a winding. The dark wood body features an elegant gilt-tone foliate decoration on the front and the original interior paper label reading AUTOMATIC HARP No. 9584 – Manuf’d by The Ward-Stilson Co. Patent Applied For. The back, sides and base present very nicely for its age. The front has age-related wear including some scuffing and areas of milky white finish haze/clouding, particularly around the decorative area and upper portion. Despite its age, the musical mechanism still plays, which gives this piece tremendous character. An impressive piece of early mechanical music, fraternal history and American decorative craftsmanship. Please see all photos carefully for exact condition and details. If you would like any additional photos or have any questions, please ask.

Antique 1885 Mermod Frères Swiss 10-Air Cylinder Music Box. This is a lovely late 19th-century Mermod Frères 10-air cylinder music box, circa 1885. This is a classic Swiss music box with a beautiful illustrated tune sheet and a wonderful, crisp tone. The mechanism is in excellent condition – the cylinder pins are tall and sharp, the comb is complete, and it runs smoothly with a loud, clear, and bright sound. It plays exceptionally well. The case shows its age. The lid has a visible crack that goes all the way through, along with scratches on the floral inlay, chips, and areas of missing varnish/paint. The sides of the case are in much better shape with nice original finish. This is a very playable example of a Mermod Frères music box. While the case has honest wear and a crack in the lid, the musical movement itself is very clean and sounds fantastic. Comes exactly as pictured. Please review all photos carefully. 18″ Long x 9″ wide x 5.5 tall. Also includes the original zither muffler (the paper strip in the silver tube), which creates a softer, reedy tone when engaged.
