This is a Bontems Vintage Singing Bird Automation. It measures approximately 11 inches tall. Bottom has the number 5320371 and the side has the number 132. From a local estate. Cosmetics-Heavy wear, coating loss, corrosion, and lots of former cleaning polish in the grooves. Bird is missing most of its feathers and is very dusty inside. It was in storage for decades. Operationally it does wind up and the bird part seems to generally function. The beak opens & closes, head turns, and the tail moves. The music part though does not make any sounds. When the movement is running the accordion part moves but the piston part that controls the sounds is frozen. Good for someone who likes a project. See lots of photos of what you are getting. BONTEMS SINGING BIRD IN FLOWERPOT MUSIC BOX. The Bontems family, of France, began producing decorative mechanical singing birds, starting with Blaise Bontems in the 1840’s, and growing into a large family enterprise headquartered in Paris. Besides singing bird boxes and cages, Bontems produced other fanciful adaptations, such as pistols and glass-domed trees with animated birds singing in the branches and seemingly flying too and fro. All of these were meant to decorate the exquisite homes of their wealthy clientele. Which brings us to this fabulous item, a “Singing Bird in Flowerpot” (oiseau chanteur sur cache-pot’). We refer you to the full-page display on page 300 of the “Bible” of this subject, Christian Bailly’s “Flights of Fancy”. As you can see, the “flower pot” is a fine Sevres porcelain vase, inside of which the mechanism is concealed. The bird itself sits on a perch atop the display of silk flowers. Take a look, and listen. You will be hard pressed to find a nicer example anywhere; to begin with these are very desirable and rarely come up for sale, especially in this condition. We acquired it from the personal collection of our restorer, who kept it until until his passing last year.
