CREATOR: Perhaps Bontems, only marked “France”. DETAILS: A wonderful large singing birdcage automaton! Very unusual art deco piece cage, chrome and glass rods with hand-painted wood panels. The cage holds two feathered birds that move and sing. They open their beaks, turn their heads and flutter their tails along with their chirpy song. PERIOD: Early 20th century. MARKS: Wood is stamped “France” on the bottom. CONDITION: Overall good, the birds’ feathers are a bit dusty and disintegrated. The red bird is missing its tail feathers, The yellow bird’s beak doesn’t move as much as the red’s. Minor age and wear to other materials. One discreet chip in back glass panel, mostly hidden by chrome frame. Mechanism seems to work great and runs for over 4 minutes on a full wind. DIMENSIONS: 17 1/2″ by 13 1/2″ by 10. This is a very fine c. 1880 French oil painting on canvas, fitted with a Swiss music box and clock appearing to be a part of the scenery, set into a clock tower by the mountainous lakeside. This was made at a time when French artisans catered to the international carriage trade, i. Folks on the Grand Tour, and placed music boxes inside of expensive, beautiful pieces such as sewing kits, paintings, etc. For them to bring home to their manor houses or castles. Measures 39″ wide x 32″ tall. Very heavy overall, weighing about 75 lbs. Recently completely restored in Switzerland. The large (10-cylinder, 6 tunes) antique music box looks and plays as-new. The French 8-day clockworks strikes a gong on the hour and half-hour. On the hour, the music box will start to play one of the six tunes. The music box can be silenced, or, if you wish, played on demand. There are several control rods on the bottom and right side to accomplish this. We have also placed clear instructions underneath for future reference. The large ornate painting frame sits atop a wooden box that houses the music box and clock, and is hinged at the top side. To access, one lifts the bottom of the frame and there is a wooden strut that will set the painting in the raised, open position. A beautiful, unique addition for the finest of homes, and sure to put a smile on the faces of admiring guests! We will build a custom wood crate that will safely protect this treasures in transit, and that you can utilize for future use if the need should arise. Both boxes covered with beautiful engravings and decorated with flower relief. A rich enamel lady figure medallion located on the center of each box. Interior of each box is covered with velvet to protect your valuable jewelries. When you open the large round box, it starts to play a series of delightful music. Then you will notice a small clock in the center with visible ticking pendulum. Both clock and music box are in proper working order. This birdcage measures approx. 8 1/2″ tall x 5 3/4″ in diameter (including the legs). This brass birdcage is gorgeous with blue moonstones and scrolled metalwork. The bird has real feathers. When wound he should sing, but he does not sing. He moves great though, with beak opening and closing, body moving side to side, and tail fluttering up and down. Likely there is a hole in the bellows inside. Very tiny screws are along the side, and three underneath that hold it together. It is complete but missing the ringlet that was attached at the top. Also the switch underneath does not react any differently between’continuous’ and’intermission’. Yet the on/off function does work fine. Unmarked but possibly French or German made.
