Up for sale is a wonderful Antique late 19. Century example of a Stella Double Comb Grand Music Box complete with the box having its own drawer and also the bottom matching cabinet. The finish is original and in wonderful condition throughout. This machine was professionally gone through mechanically a little more than a year ago and plays beautifully. The wood I believe is of cherry mahogany. The machine comes with 30 Disk all together all in good shape. The Disk size is, 17 ½ across. There’s nothing left to do but enjoy it. There are in one or two spots a minor piece of small skinny trim toward the back of the lower matching storage case missing but you have to look for it and does not take away from the beauty of this set and could easily be put back. 43 Tall all together with the lid down including bottom case. 29 ¼ Wide, music box itself. 22 Deep, music box itself. 30 ¼ Wide, lower cabinet. 24 Deep, lower cabinet. 29 high, lower cabinet. 17 ¼ size disk, (30). I had the cabinet refinished several years ago and had the combs and leads checked and cleaned. All the teeth are present on both combs. STELLA “GRAND” CONSOLE MUSIC BOX. In our efforts to provide absolute top-quality items for sale, we continually search the world for the finest antique music boxes, phonographs, and clocks. Our on-line collection, available for viewing at Musical Treasures of Miami, displays a vast array of museum-quality items, which not only include antique music boxes, but also phonographs, clocks and other antique mechanical rarities. Stellas were premier products of the renowned Swiss maker, Mermod Freres, of St. Mermod also made cylinder music boxes (under their own brand name) and Mira disk music boxes. The distinguishing characteristic of Stellas was their unique, patented “projectionless” disk, and the equally unique comb design to play these disks. Only one of the double combs are visible to the casual observer. The second (“rear”) comb is positioned at a 90 degree vertical angle and is completely out of sight from above. Nonetheless, it adds to the musical tone and complexity in the same manner as a standard double-comb does on other music boxes. There is a speed controller and automatic shut-off feature at the end of a disk play. Serial #4968 is stamped on the bedplate, and the governor lid shows the last patent date of 1900. Very importantly, there are no broken teeth, a common problem with Stellas resulting from playing rusty disks and/or mishandling when changing the disks. The solid mahogany console, with various trim adornments, measures 30″ wide x 23″ deep x 30 high. It has a locking disk storage compartment. This plays size 17.5 disks, of which the one playing is included. The family we acquired this from unfortunately misplaced the other disks, but they may turn up. This is a beautiful, well maintained, Stella Music Box with 17 1/4 discs that plays very well. Late 1800s model, Sound is excellent with good base. Combs in excellent condition with no broken tooth. It comes with over 25 discs, I shall list them here soon. Check the video on u tube Stella-Dixie-Land. No repairs or maintenance work ever done nor needed.
