MINIATURE CONGREVE ROLLING BALL. Antique German Black Forest Carved Wooden Figure Mechanical Whistler. This antique German whistling automaton is a masterful example of Black Forest woodcarving, likely dated in the early 1900’s. The figure portrays a jaunty street character, often referred to as a “Whistling Man” or “Vagabond, ” wearing a classic bowler hat and a long overcoat with his hands tucked casually into his pockets. The carving features the distinctive faceted, “chip-cut” style that highlights the artisan’s handiwork, giving the wood a textured, rhythmic appearance that catches the light from various angles. His face is expressive and whimsical, with pursed lips positioned perfectly to mimic the act of whistling. Beneath the wooden exterior lies a complex mechanical heart consisting of a brass clockwork motor and a specialized bellows system. When wound with a traditional T-shaped key, the internal mechanism powers a sliding piston whistle that produces a clear, multi-note melody. As the music plays, the figure’s head slowly rotates from side to side, creating a lifelike and charming performance. A small screen or vent on the back of the figure allows the sound to resonate clearly while protecting the delicate internal components from dust. Stamped on the base, hard to read. It worked the whistling part and hard turning, but now the key appears to be over wound. The internal parts to the battery operated lamp are corroded and damaged. Very rare piece, needs some repairs. Colors are good no broken parts off the wood it looks like to me.

Antique German Brass Singing Bird Cage Music Box Automaton Karl Griesbaum NR. Offered here is a beautiful antique German brass singing bird cage music box automaton, believed to have been manufactured in the late 19th century and attributed to the renowned workshop of Karl Griesbaum. These remarkable mechanical creations were handcrafted in Germany and are highly sought after for their intricate engineering and charming animated displays. Housed within an elegant brass birdcage, the feathered songbird is perched on a decorative branch adorned with foliage and berries. When activated, the internal mechanism causes the bird to animate and perform while accompanied by music. Pieces of this type were luxury novelty items of their era and remain prized by collectors of antique music boxes, automatons, and fine mechanical curiosities. This example was discovered at a local estate sale and remains in largely original, untouched condition. The winding key turns and the mechanism engages enough to produce slight movement from the bird, indicating that at least part of the mechanism is functioning (see video). However, the automaton is not fully operational, and because of the delicate and highly intricate nature of these antique movements, I have elected not to disassemble or attempt any repairs. It is being offered exactly as found so that the next owner or collector may decide whether to preserve, display, or professionally restore it. Cosmetically, the piece presents very well for its age. It retains a lovely antique patina with only expected signs of age and use. One small screw is missing from the base, and the bird appears to be missing a small feather or two around the crest/head area. The brass cage, decorative top finial, and overall structure remain attractive and display beautifully. Please carefully review all photos and the included video, as they are an important part of the description. Reasonable offers are always welcome! Antique estate-found example in very good display condition. Believed to date to the late 1800s and possibly attributable to Karl Griesbaum, Germany. Winding key turns and partially activates the mechanism; the bird exhibits slight movement. Music box/automaton is not fully functional and has not been serviced or repaired. One small screw is missing from the base. Bird appears to be missing a small feather or two on the head/crest. Brass surfaces retain an attractive original aged patina with light wear consistent with age. Interior fabric and decorative foliage show normal age-related wear.
