The Longman and Broderip organs are the. First’full-size’ mechanical devices designed solely to reproduce music in the home. This is a very rare and significant piece. Only the very wealthy could own one of these at the end of the 18th Century. It predates all cylinder and interchangeable disc’music boxes’ which would become available about a couple decades later. It is derivative of English church barrel organs, scaled down for use in home parlors of the upper class. There are very few of these left in the world and this is the only one seen in this particular, more ornate, cabinet style. Some songs we know today are because they were “pinned for posterity” on the barrels of these earliest organs. Supplied with (3) 16 1/2 interchangeable cylinders each with 10 tunes for a total of 30. All of them play correctly. Songs include “The Irish Washerwoman” and “Marseilles March”. It is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. The fabric, internal frame and medallion within the oval have been replaced. Longman and Broderip’s manufacturing address was 26 Cheapside and 13 Haymarket Streets, London. Six stops (1 drum, 1 triangle) 17 Keys including drum, triangle 60 Pipes: 1 rank – 15 wooden pipes (closed Diapason) 1 rank – 15 lead pipes (Principle) 1 rank – 15 lead pipes (12th) 1 rank – 15 lead pipes (15th) Dimensions: 24″ wide, 17 3/4″ deep, 53 high Barrels are stored in a separate compartment which opens in the side of the base of the organ and are changed through the flap in the left side of the case. Drum and triangle occupy the top part of the cabinet in the front, barrel in center and the bellows below. Signed on the barrels: Longman & Broderip… Manufacture, Repair, and Sell, Wholesale and Retail, Organs, Piano Fortes, Harpsichords, Spinnets, Violins, Guitars, Flutes, Fifes, Horns, Clarinets and every other kind of Musical Instrument. Also Engrave & Print the greatest variety of Music by the most approved Masters. Harpsichords, Piano Fortes and Spinnets Tuned in Town & Country, on the most reasonable Terms by the Year, Quarter, or Pr. Import the best Roman Strings & genuine German Wire. With its beautiful, polished mahogany cabinet carved and inlaid designs on the legs and borders, it is a unique period antique in excellent condition. On July 11, 2015 Antiques Roadshow had a Longman and Broderip chamber organ which was appraised by Leslie Keno in Cleveland, Ohio. The version being offered is obviously a more’deLuxe’ and perhaps slightly later version with front stops and much more ornate and refined cabinet work. Additionally, this organ is in complete playing condition, whereas that one was clearly not, hence Leslie’s rapid conclusion of that segment. Also, there was no mention of more than one barrel, whereas this one has its complete set of 3. I’m usually skeptical of the appraisal prices on Antique Roadshow as being high. However, in light of the above comparisons, a purchaser of this organ would be getting a very fair value. Member, Musical Box Society International. A tall, imposing, and extremely scarce Jean Fanis upright coin-operated, automatic (barrel) piano; complete, but not playing, for restoration. We cannot find an entry in any reference work for this machine; (so, if you have knowledge of this specific machine, please advise). Quarter sawn oak cabinet measures 81″ in height X 57″ wide X 36 depth; cabinet appears to be original rich finish. Heavy machine, on original heavy casters. Original, huge, spring-drive iron-cased motor, piano components, barrel, crank, coin slot, lighting fixtures (and frayed internal wiring) and maker’s original brass name plate. Top pediment lifts off. We have no keys for the locks. The glass bead drapery shades for the double brass electric sconces are fraying. No bulbs or shades for the two standing electric decorative brass lights at front. There are three glass reverse painted front panels — the center arched panel has old partly repaired cracks, and one small triangle of missing glass. The two dancing girls to left an right are also reverse painted and intact. The interior is very dusty and dirty, but appears complete. We can locate no information on this Jean Fanis coin operated piano — and we have tried! For restoration (although it is impressive standing silent). See photos; and, if additional photos needed, just ask. We did not move the machine from the wall to take back panel pictures, but back is complete. We have labor to assist in moving the machine from the building and loading it. NOTE: We added three interior photos per request. The motor, which is intact, is located beneath the coin slot end of the barrel. The machine is against the wall and VERY difficult for one person to move, so lifted the crown pediment and shot these photos from a ladder, looking down into the interior of the machine. Hope these photos are helpful. The machine has been unused for decades and is dusty, as revealed by the photos. Please communicate with us, if interested. Antique Handlebar piano, Víctor Bermejo. Absolutely Unique and Wonderful. This is a unique piece a rare find. An early 1900s street piano in playable state. This is a great addition to any serious collection, man cave or for a restaurant decoration. The upright piano mechanics and roller with ten songs. The songs are selected on the side of the instrument. The wood cabinet decorated with brown paint and gold paint trim. The piano has just been roughly tuned, I will work on the fine tuning. Below is a video of the piano playing one of the songs. Antique Handlebar piano, Víctor Bermejo – YouTube. Research: Handlebar piano, Madrid organ. According to the Madrid newspaper, the builder advertised himself between 1901 and 1911, where he made his last commercial appearance. There are also a few museum pieces. I have not identified the list of songs on the current wheel. I will update the listing once I have more information. I believe one of the songs is an old Spanish play La Verbena de la Paloma (The Fair of the Dove). The play premiered in Madrid in 1894. Below is the clip of a 1963 Spanish full length movie based on the the play, it features the piano in the few few seconds. La Verbena de la Paloma (1963) Trailer – YouTube.
