Antique Symphonion Brevete Music Box, Rare, Plays Beautifully, Includes 8 Discs. Rich, beautiful, deep sound. Dimensions: 8 1/2″W x 7″D x 4 1/2H. Please watch and listen to the videos and examine photos carefully. Inside paper affixed to the top has been ripped and removed and someone appears to have written 656 Fe 23. Significant splitting of the wood on the top of the box. See photos and videos. Significant nick/scratch on the right side near the crank. Scratches throughout the wooden body. Dusty and needs cleaning, but I won’t touch an antique! Scratches and significant wear on the top of the box where it is marked “Brevete” and Symphonium. All discs are tested and play. There is a scratching sound when the discs play; you can hear this on the video. The discs I can read are marked as follows. It’s in our Blood. There are 4 more, but I can’t read them. This is a working (plays) antique Swiss C. Knusli six (6) Tune Cylinder Music Box. This wooden music box is in good antique condition, as shown. The outside of the box is paint decorated along with straight line inlays on the lift-lid and front panel. The front panel has a keyhole but, unfortunately we do not have the key, so we do not know if the lock works. The cylinder music box. Has a metal comb with 56 teeth to catch the pins on the cylinder and play its beautiful melody. There are two teeth ends missing on this 56 tooth comb, as shown in the close-up photos. These two missing teeth do not detract from the melodies that it plays. The titles of the six songs that it plays are hand written on the original paper label on the inside of the lift-lid. This paper does have some wear, as shown. An interior glass lift-lid allows you to watch the cylinder turn as it creates soothing music from earlier days. The winding lever operates smoothly and easily to crank-up the music box. I have cleaned and restored the original finish on the box, applying a fresh coat of paste wax for further protection. The six songs are as follows. Comin Thro the Rye. Dancing in the Barn. Please review all of the photographs for additional condition reporting. This original vintage music box plays like new and comes with 16 discs in the original canister. For 140 years of age this piece is in beautiful condition and was one of my mother’s favorite pieces. The development of Symphonion disc music boxes made tunes easy to add and relatively inexpensive, as well as making good music boxes more affordable. Symphonion (or Kalliope) boxes were originally made in Leipzig, Germany during the late 1880’s. They were destined to become some of the greatest music boxes ever known. They were designed to accept individual tune discs, allowing one music box to play many tunes. Mechanism is in excellent working condition. Lid has beautiful decorations.
