MINIATURE CONGREVE ROLLING BALL. Antique German Black Forest Carved Wooden Figure Mechanical Whistler. This antique German whistling automaton is a masterful example of Black Forest woodcarving, likely dated in the early 1900’s. The figure portrays a jaunty street character, often referred to as a “Whistling Man” or “Vagabond, ” wearing a classic bowler hat and a long overcoat with his hands tucked casually into his pockets. The carving features the distinctive faceted, “chip-cut” style that highlights the artisan’s handiwork, giving the wood a textured, rhythmic appearance that catches the light from various angles. His face is expressive and whimsical, with pursed lips positioned perfectly to mimic the act of whistling. Beneath the wooden exterior lies a complex mechanical heart consisting of a brass clockwork motor and a specialized bellows system. When wound with a traditional T-shaped key, the internal mechanism powers a sliding piston whistle that produces a clear, multi-note melody. The music box itself has a wind up key on the back, and once turned on, there is a ring that circles the Holy Family and there are four stationary lambs on it. The music of Silent Night plays when the music box is turned on. Inside the creche are the Holy Family (3), 4 lambs and 1 Donkey. On the outside are a cow, 3 Wisemen, 2 Lambs, and 2 Shepherds one boy and one girl. The individual figures are about 3″ tall (except the lambs) and the Creche is 13.5″ wide by 8 deep.

PLEASE NOTE, this item is listed at a lower price because a couple of the tines are broken off. The music still plays well (watch video to hear it), but it is an imperfection. The only other imperfections are a shallow scratch on the left angels arm, a couple small pen marks on the interior and a couple notches on the bottom of the top interior lid (see photos). Music box is in overall great vintage condition. From a smoke free home.

It features a Nativity, the Holy Family with palm trees and sheep. This beautifully detailed music box was made in the Erzgebirge region in Germany by the Richard Glaesser company. When the music is playing, the entire platform rotates. The musical movement is a Sankyo. The sound is bright and clear and it plays very well Silent Night. To wind it up, just turn the key underneath clockwise. There is a working stopper on the side. The music box is in excellent condition, apart from a repair to the star and some palm tree leaves. Please look at all pictures and zoom in. It would be a great Christmas gift and comes with its original box (has some writing on top) and instructions. It measures: 8″ tall and 6″ wide.
