This unusual little wind up music box packs a lot of punch! Please use all photos and the video for cosmetic condition and to see how unique and intricately this music box is made! It has some flaws, which I’m going to explain so you will know, but the music and dancing couple both work fine. The music box’s composition consists of what I believe is Bakelite, or perhaps celluloid or some type of acrylic. It’s shaped like a vintage TV and stereo console. In front there’s a simulated curved screen TV with a picture in black of white (of a famous Italian landscape from the isle of Capri), underneath that are simulated speakers with gold cloth covers. Beside the TV on either side are curved pearly marbled acrylic doors. These open up wide to simulate a bar or storage. I can just picture dollhouse sized wine glasses and bottles of wine stored there on the little shelves! This area is backed with mirrors. On one side the mirrors are cracked and both mirrors have some silver loss. Also, the outside of one door is slightly damaged, again, looks like heat damage. Reminder, use photos to guide you as to what I’m referring to. The wind up mechanism is underneath on bottom. Above the TV, where the stereo in a vintage console usually is, is a couple dancing on a dance floor. If one raises the lid to the stereo, the couple is raised up on the dance floor and begin dancing to the tune of the music box. The tune is The Isle of Capri. The top of the stereo is black acrylic and has inlaid pearl or shell, but unfortunately some of it has been damaged, apparently again from heat. This has warped the top, too, and also one side of the set of hinges has come loose because of it. Therefore, it’s necessary to physically hold up the top of the “stereo door” in order for the dancers to dance and the music to play. It also would not be a good idea to close the lid completely anymore because it would put too much strain on the remaining working hinges. But it works fine as is described and displays beautifully as it is. Use video to guide you. This is a unique addition to any music box collection and would be such a romantic gift! It is so striking on display. Your eye is drawn to it!

MIRA DISK MUSIC BOX. “An absolutely superb-sounding instrument”. This is a great “Mira” music box, made in Switzerland, and playing size 18.5 disks, which can be conveniently stored in the lower section. As you probably know, Miras are famous for their fantastic sound, which, size-for-size, is considered to be the very best of all music boxes, even Regina. Croix, Switzerland by Mermod Freres, who had a long history of watchmaking, cylinder music boxes, and the famous “Stella” music boxes. But Miras were their premier musical accomplishment and are highly prized by collectors today. Overall dimensions are: 30″ wide x 24″ deep x 40″ high (when closed) and 60″ high (opened). There is a lock and key for the upper works, but not for the lower doors. The finish and decals on the front and sides are original, and the top has been refinished with a new decal applied, so it will be a showpiece in your home. The double-comb musical movement has no broken or replaced teeth, and no damper squeaks or any other issues. The combs show some light patina (after 120+ years). The sound is so loud and resonant due to double “sound bridges” between the bed plate and the spruce sound board below. For sale is what I believe is a Mira Empress 15 1/2 inch disk console music box. It was professionally restored. It plays very well as it should. There is a shrinkage crack above and below the key in the door that could not be completely restored and it shows in the pictures. It is a double comb and I do not believe there are any broken teeth. STELLA “GRAND” CONSOLE MUSIC BOX. In our efforts to provide absolute top-quality items for sale, we continually search the world for the finest antique music boxes, phonographs, and clocks. Our on-line collection, available for viewing at Musical Treasures of Miami, displays a vast array of museum-quality items, which not only include antique music boxes, but also phonographs, clocks and other antique mechanical rarities. Stellas were premier products of the renowned Swiss maker, Mermod Freres, of St. Mermod also made cylinder music boxes (under their own brand name) and Mira disk music boxes. The distinguishing characteristic of Stellas was their unique, patented “projectionless” disk, and the equally unique comb design to play these disks. Only one of the double combs are visible to the casual observer. The second (“rear”) comb is positioned at a 90 degree vertical angle and is completely out of sight from above. Nonetheless, it adds to the musical tone and complexity in the same manner as a standard double-comb does on other music boxes. There is a speed controller and automatic shut-off feature at the end of a disk play. Serial #4968 is stamped on the bedplate, and the governor lid shows the last patent date of 1900. Very importantly, there are no broken teeth, a common problem with Stellas resulting from playing rusty disks and/or mishandling when changing the disks. The solid mahogany console, with various trim adornments, measures 30″ wide x 23″ deep x 30 high. It has a locking disk storage compartment. This plays size 17.5 disks, of which the one playing is included. The family we acquired this from unfortunately misplaced the other disks, but they may turn up.
