SWISS CYLINDER MUSIC BOX WITH INLAYS OF WOOD AND WITH BELLS! I’ve got this really cool 19th Century Music box. I bought this from a gentleman about 5 years ago. I’ve only used it occasionally for friends and family. It works absolutely perfect. The sound is very robust. Please examine the pictures carefully. It is very heavy. It has a glass lift cover once you open the case. I guess it’s a display cover so when you operate it, you can watch the bells and drum go round while protecting the works. Truly a magnificent piece. Also no potential risk of damage during transport. I posted a video on you tube for your viewing pleasure for an up close look and most importantly, an audible example of how it sounds. I strongly urge and highly recommend you to spend a few minutes and view them as it will more than likely answer any and all the questions you may have. The box does in fact function and sounds off with relatively good tone and clarity, the playing combs are in very good condition with one exception, a single tooth tip is missing and needs to be replaced and perhaps a damper or two, thats it. The bellow assembly does function with some slightly diminished power and sound, the last time I looked at it, it appeared to need some fresh leather re covering. However, all the reeds sound off and the reed assembly is complete and functioning as expected. I believe the box was mfg by a company called Greiner, later known as B. The previous owner informed me that he had some bellow work done and a signature was found, Joseph Bornand, New York, c/o Ambers, 1893, he also forwarded a picture of it to me as well, If you would like to see it, please make a request and I will send it to you. The previous owner also informed me that one of the combs was also engraved Greiner on the bottom, I have not confirmed that, Just forwarding the info to you. Apparently, the Bornand name is of some stature and relevance in the music box world, design patents, notable collections in New York and a daughter in law that once served as President or vice president of the MBSI apparently. There is just too much info to convey, please just take a few minutes of your time and watch the video, it will answer all your questions Im sure. Beautiful 10 song cylinder music made in the USA Circa 1880s to 1900 i believe, unusual to have the Box made here as most were imported, has unbelievable nickel finishes inside the box and a great inlaid top with beautiful instruments, music box has 61 needle comb completely intact, box has manual wind on the side simply pull the handle towards the front a few times and the Box begins to play, top cover appears to be made of Walnut I believe, and what I originally thought was a stain I thought is a type of burl in the wood and gives it great character, the outer black lacquer like finish does have some wearing to which it has worn threw in some places, no big missing pieces or cracks in the wood appears very solid. Music assembly has been cleaned and oiled and plays very well, the Box does switch through gears no problem only thing is that the counter will need adjustment or maybe a new spring (very easy fix) as it does not completely register on the dial itself due to age and I don’t think it has the same resistance it once did, I played with it a little bit and got it much better working, the switches on the side that can change or make the song repeat well the second switch to stop and play the song at some point must have had the end broken off and somebody many many years ago just simply put a manual switch in, this could also easily be repaired just simply thread the arm back into the switch.
