Is it a Cylinder or Disk Music Box?? Perhaps the most unique music box ever created, with an intriguing back story, dating to the early 1890’s. At that time, Polyphon Musikwerke of Germany decided to manufacture music boxes in the U. They sent Gustave Brachhausen to America with a mandate to begin manufacturing as soon as possible. Brackhausen set up shop in New Jersey and initially manufactured to Polyphon’s designs, then quickly moving to newer more “Americanized” designs, which became the Regina lineup. As luck would have it, he lived in a house across the street from Frederick Otto, who, together with his sons, ran a successful manufacturing company specializing in surgical instruments. Brachhausen and Otto, as neighbors, shared a social life and bragged to one another of their respective commercial successes. Otto, however, cleverly learned from his new friend the many aspects of music box manufacture, and decided to have a go of it himself. To avoid patent infringement issues, he and his sons designed a new type of music box, a sort of hybrid of cylinder and disk movements, which they branded the “Capital”. The tapered music sheets looked similar in size and shape to the removable cuffs that gentlemen used on their dress clothes. Thus, the term Capital Cuff music box has stuck with these pieces to this day. Due to the competition, their neighborly relationship was now past history; Otto and Brachhausen entered into a long and litigious period, with Regina emerging victorious. It was a pyrrhic victory, though, as the phonograph displaced music boxes soon after. This model being offered, is the Model “F” (Duplex Comb). It utilizes the largest cuffs that Capital offered, 7.75″ x 4.25″ x 3.25. The double combs each have 81 teeth, all in perfect condition with no replacements or damper issues. The F is the Holy Grail for Capital music box aficionados, very few were produced and has the best sound of all. Everything is in wonderful condition, with the polished mahogany case measuring 28″ x 17″ x 12. The Serial # is a very early F-3, dating to 1895. This sterling silver case is profusely decorated with finely carved birds, musical instruments, leaves, grapes and flowers, and it has the shape of an allegorical and stylized table with four figural caryatids, most probably child or satyrs. And caryatid or leg has woman figures on top. A really fabulous, exquisite and fantastic singing bird musck box made in France during XIX century. Around 1610, Georg Fronmiller of Augsburg, Germany crafted a turtle automaton clock in gold-plated copper, iron, brass, bronze, wood, silver, and enamel, making this most likely the earliest known turtle automaton. It is currently at home in the Princely Treasury of the Hessian Museum (Fürstliche Schatzkammer, Hessisches Landesmuseum) of Darmstadt. A spring mechanism wound by key allows the paper-maché-and-wood animal with articulated head and limbs to realistically crawl. More decorative instances were made in the twentieth century, with Sotheby’s in 2013 having auctioned an interesting key-wound silver turtle automaton. With a singing bird in its shell made in Germany in about 1975 (exactly same model offered in this listing). While the work is not attributed, it certainly docks into the tradition begun there in the 1600s. Late 19th Century Singing Bird Clock Signed Bontems. Signed on case, clock movement and bird movement. An exceptional late 19th century gilt-bronze and champlevee mantle clock with a singing bird by Bontems, no. The bird flaps its wings, rotates its head and body and moves its beak and tail when activated by the clock or manually. The gilt-bronze case depicts a female figure dressed in a flowing gown interacting with a singing bird perched on a decorative dressing mirror. The top portions of the case are extravagantly decorated with champlevee, the shaped base has cast decorative elements and the whole stands on a felt covered ebonized base. The champlevee and gilt-bronze dial has Roman numerals on black cartouches and decorative gilt-bronze hands. The time and strike movement is stamped H&F, Paris. The dome is slightly too high, but fits so well we decided to leave it. The birdsong lasts about 20 seconds per hour or will continuously play on demand. For one of the only other known examples see.
