If you’re an uncompromising collector of antique technology, make sure to check out all my listings after you look at this one. I don’t think you’ll find a better, broader or more balanced assortment of technical antiques anywhere — hundreds of listings each year, almost all of them featuring eye-popping “gee whiz” gadgetry in exceptional original condition. Here’s a large, exquisite disc music box manufactured by Symphonion in the early 1890’s. The music box plays 13 5/8 Symphonion discs, ten of which are included with it. The instrument’s musical movement is housed in an early and ornate Symphonion cabinet whose burl walnut top and sides will most assuredly make it the focal point of any room in which is placed. Condition is excellent, and the music box still plays beautifully (see the video I’ve posted with the pictures). Cabinet finish is original, turned wood corners are undamaged, and the burl wood patterns are almost mesmerizing in their intensity. Unlike later disc music boxes, whose spring motors are wound with a crank, this early instrument’s motor is wound with a lever located on the lower face of the cabinet. Brass fittings are original and undamaged. The label on the underside of the lid is original and nearly perfect. The unique Symphonion “sublime harmonie” double-comb mechanism is likewise in excellent condition, with no rust. No corrosion, no missing or broken teeth. The governor is working properly, as you can hear when you watch the video. Overall, a wonderfully maintained 130+ year old music box, and I’m confident the new owner will be pleased. With the lid lowered, the cabinet measures 22″ x 19″ x 11. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your “bargain” arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you’ll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.

Reuge “Dauphin” Grand Crystal 3 tune /144 Note Sublime Harmony Cylinder Music Box. The “Dauphin” is an especially beautiful piece. Fine crystal glass surrounds one of the finest movements that Reuge makes, mounted to a piece of luxurious grained exotic rosewood and all stylistically supported by gilt dolphin feet. This Swiss music box is an absolutely beautiful example of mechanical beauty, playing 3 Mozart classic aires. “The Magic Flute, “Eine Kleine Nacht Musik” and “The Turkish March. Watch this Sublime Harmony 3 tune144 note movement sparkle as light reflects on the comb teeth while you enjoy the music. Notice the nice tune counter above cylinder. The mechanism is all visible through the glass and as notes are played to produce the movement’s excellent tonal quality, the sound resonates from the wood sound board base. Bed plate is stamped with a unique series number “00218” dating this to first series of this design. There is winding key on the bottom to wind the mainspring which is a double spring which last many times longer than the regular Reuge spring barrel. This box can run full tune score multiple times on one winding with the giant assist spring you see on bottom of the box next to winding key. On front at bottom center is an “on/off” lever. Majority of them are listed as. “Sounds excellent” by other sellers. Rare Large Antique Swiss Cylinder Music Box with Ebonized Case and Inlaid Lid, Plays 5 Famous Opera Tunes and a Single Waltz. This Swiss Sublime Harmony-Piccolo music box is an absolutely beautiful example playing fine arrangements of 5 famous 19th century opera tunes and a Strauss Waltz. It has a 13 long cylinder and three combs…. Two are sublime harmony matched combs with 44 teeth each and a piccolo comb with 35 teeth. The is a total of 123 teeth which is great for full rich sound. To the left of the box you have the winding crank handle which is pulled back and forth to wind the mainspring. To the right of the box there is 2 levers one for the play/stop feature and the other to change/repeat the music. The box will continue to play the tune unless the lever is set to “stop” position. All the works are protected by a glazed hinged top which is all protected by the fantastic inlaid walnut large box. Majority of them are listed as. “Sounds excellent” by other sellers. This beautiful antique music box was made by Thomas Dawkins & Co. Of Geneva, Switzerland in c. It is aprox 16″ x 8″ x 10.5 tall. It is upright Model #36956, as indicated on the handle and underside. It is in a beautiful wood case with marquetry wood inlay and mother of pearl inlay. It has the Dawkins sphinx stamp on the governor, and when fully working plays multiple songs. It needs some restoration work, both to the mechanics and the box as it has some wear to the veneer and a chip on top as shown in photo and some missing teeth. We would love to find a home for it that will restore it to its original beauty!
