This rare, hand-carved Black Forest “Whistler” music box depicts a jovial Navy Sailor and was crafted by renowned German maker Karl Griesbaum, likely between 1900 and 1939. Griesbaum’s work is highly sought after for its intricate detailing and mechanical ingenuity, and this piece is no exception. When fully functional, the sailor would whistle in sync with the music once wound, thanks to a cleverly designed internal bellows and movement system. These animated automaton figures are iconic examples of traditional German Black Forest craftsmanship and are prized by collectors worldwide. Function : Mechanical whistling automaton music box. Approximate Dimensions : [Insert if known]. Condition Notes (Please Read Carefully). Wood shows stress cracks from age and climate-related drying. Minor wear throughout : paint loss, dings, dents, chips, scuffs, and surface scratches. The back panel is missing, and the original key is not included. The mechanism does run, but it needs professional servicing by a clock or music box repair specialist. The whistling horn or bellows is partially detached, so the whistle sound is weak or incorrect. The string connecting the head to the mechanism is broken and will need to be replaced and properly installed. This piece is ideal for collectors, restorers, or anyone who appreciates antique mechanical music boxes and Black Forest artistry. The carving all and all in good condition for its age some stress cracks in the wood from drying and temperature changes along with some minor issues including paint loss, dings, dents, chips, cracks, scrapes, scratches, nicked edges, smudges, and crackling. It could also use a good cleaning. The back door to the carving is missing and so is the key the mechanism does work but need serviceing from a clook repair person. The bag or horn that makes the whislte sound is unglued in a small section as well so the whistle sound is not correct. There is a line that connects the head to the mechanism that needs to be replaced and installed as well.
