MINIATURE CONGREVE ROLLING BALL. Antique German Black Forest Carved Wooden Figure Mechanical Whistler. This antique German whistling automaton is a masterful example of Black Forest woodcarving, likely dated in the early 1900’s. The figure portrays a jaunty street character, often referred to as a “Whistling Man” or “Vagabond, ” wearing a classic bowler hat and a long overcoat with his hands tucked casually into his pockets. The carving features the distinctive faceted, “chip-cut” style that highlights the artisan’s handiwork, giving the wood a textured, rhythmic appearance that catches the light from various angles. His face is expressive and whimsical, with pursed lips positioned perfectly to mimic the act of whistling. Beneath the wooden exterior lies a complex mechanical heart consisting of a brass clockwork motor and a specialized bellows system. When wound with a traditional T-shaped key, the internal mechanism powers a sliding piston whistle that produces a clear, multi-note melody. As the music plays, the figure’s head slowly rotates from side to side, creating a lifelike and charming performance. A small screen or vent on the back of the figure allows the sound to resonate clearly while protecting the delicate internal components from dust. These automatons, popularized by German firms like Griesbaum, are highly sought after by collectors for their blend of folk art and precision engineering. The interior reveals a horizontal bellows at the base and a series of gears that coordinate the pitch of the whistle with the movement of the head. To maintain such a piece, it is essential to keep the leather of the bellows supple and the clockwork clean, as these mechanical “buskers” were built to provide a lifetime of whimsical entertainment through their unique combination of sight and sound. Measures: 13″ by 4-1/2″ by 3-1/2. All item will be carefully packed with real packing material, bubble wrap, Styrofoam, foam peanut, & NO newspaper. FEEDBACK: Your feedback is very important to us. We are eager to work with our customers. We believe in communication.

This vintage Reuge music box features a beautifully crafted wooden case with a glass lid that allows you to view the intricate mechanism inside. It plays music from a metal cylinder and has a classic winding key on the bottom. The box is in good condition with minor surface wear consistent with age, making it a charming collectible or gift. The detailed label inside the lid adds to its authentic appeal. Plays both tunes but there is some flaws in the appearance of the box.
