This early 1900’s Mira is the largest size made by the renowned Swiss firm of Mermod Freres. By the Chicago, IL, Lyon & Healy Department Store under the model name “Duo Empress”. Either way, they are the exact same, high-quality instruments of importance. The phonograph, already well-established in the early 1900’s, was consigning music boxes to the history books, so as a last-ditch attempt, Mermod (and Regina) added phonographs to these pieces and created a hybrid. In the end, they were not very successful, and the phonograph won out. But purists interested in mechanical music know that these music boxes were among the best ever made. This is perhaps the finest Mira music box we have ever had the pleasure of owning. Playing 18.5 diameter disks (10 are included in the sale), it produces not re-produces! Music that is absolutely heavenly. The double combs, with mandoline “zither” attachments, are perfectly in tune and without any broken teeth or damper squeaks. The phonograph components tone arm, reproducer, turntable, etc. Were supplied by Columbia and are in excellent condition. The brass horn supplied is also excellent in all respects. An impeccable French-polished solid mahogany cabinet, with original decals, measuring 30″ wide x 24″ deep x 42″ high (when closed) and 63″ high (when opened). The locking front doors open to reveal a storage area for the music disks. This instrument came from the estate of a major collector with impeccable taste, who demanded only “The Best”.
