Very Rare Rigid Arm Reginaphone Music Box & Phonograph
HYBRID MUSIC BOX & PHONOGRAPH. Once in a while a piece comes along that we’ve never seen before, and this is one of them, for sure. Known as a Style 116 Reginaphone, it was made c. 1905 by the Regina Music Box company at the very earliest time that they started combining their music boxes with phonographs. So early, in fact, that the patent protection of tapered tone arms had not yet expired, thus they were forced (together with Columbia, their subcontractor) to utilize a straight tone arm similar in design to the early Victor “rigid” types. In 25 years of music box collecting, this is the one and only example we’ve ever had or seen. The music box itself is very nice, playing 12.5 metal disks on duplex combs. As you can see in the picture, the combs are without broken or missing teeth, and play beautifully. We will supply six disks together with the sale. The phonograph components, made by Columbia, are in excellent shape and play great. We will supply six records and a tin of needles with the sale. The serpentine mahogany case was refinished in years past, and still gleams as if new. On the front of the case are the operating controls for starting, stopping, etc. And a speed control knob. It retains the original lock and key. Musicaltreasuresofmiami – Reginaphone Style 116 #3309 – YouTube. This is a very special instrument and the only one we’ve ever had the pleasure of owning.
