Antique Souvenir Cylinder Music Box with Key. This is a wonderful antique cylinder music box that was perhaps once was a souvenir gift. The small lightweight metal box has a painted scene of men and women arriving in their evening mode of dress of the late 18. Centuries to a building that could be a casino? Or perhaps an opera house in the Neoclassical architecture. On the front is printed in French: Le Casino a Zuric (The Casino at Zurich). Stamped in the lower left by the people in the corner are the initials MD. The sides are painted in a black and brown diamond pattern with a crinkle effect like leather. The mechanical movement winds from the bottom using the key and the switch on the front right moves the cylinder to play between the two. The switch on the front left should turn the music on or off but does not seem to work properly. There is no glass cover and doesnt appear to ever have one nor is there a tune card so I do not know what the music is. There is a key but it is not known if it is original to the box. It does need cleaning and servicing and the spring appears bent as well as a broken tooth at the very end? There is wear to the paint and the metal has a couple of minor issues as well. Please see photos as they are part of my description. The case measures approximately 3 ¾ long by 2 1/8 wide by 1 ¼ tall and weighs 10 oz. I have found a couple of similar music boxes and these were labeled as being produced around the middle 18. In my research, I found most music boxes are made of wood and never found any that were made of metal. I found no hallmarks other than the MD in the picture. I would appreciate if anyone can give my some insight on this box. Very unusual and unique case for your collection! I had a business for many years and have collected much over the years.
