This was my Mothers music box. It has been in our family since 1915. It is still in great shape, and plays discs very well. The sound is still very clear and bright despite its age. This was made in Germany around 1896, and as far as I can tell, all the wood and player mechanisms on it are still original. The overall cosmetic condition of the wood is still nice. There are no cracks in the wood anywhere. The original feet are also still very strong and support it very well. This music box weighs 50 Lbs, so that is important! The flip lid has a mirror installed on the bottom. Most players I have seen have a vintage photograph of some sort placed there. The mirror has been on this as far back as I can remember. Years ago I had an expert look this unit over at a large music box convention held in Wayne, New Jersey. He determined that the overall condition was excellent in his opinion, and it played discs very clean and clear. After careful inspection, he did notice that the lowest tyne was missing from one of the two harps underneath. It was his suggestion to just leave it, as this was not noticeable on playing back any of the discs. This is a beautiful antique instrument lovingly cared for generations by our family. I have tried to price our Symphonium substantially lower than any current Symphonium players from the same time period in similar condition being offered for sale. If you ever wanted one like this particular model, I believe this is the lowest priced one you will find. I was able to add a short video via a link below to youtube so you can listen to the music box play the standard 14 inch disc this machine uses called “Beau Ideal March” by PH Sousa, disc # 6466. 1896 Symphonium Music box – YouTube.
