BREMOND Burled Walnut 8 Aire Cylinder Music Box – 31″ x 7.75″ x 13. This Antique Music Box was made by the renowned firm of B. Brémond in, Geneva, Switzerland circa 1870s. This Music Box is housed in it’s original, casing, made from book matched burr-walnut veneers with contrasting brass inlays. The inner workings sit below an interior dust cover made with a glass panel so they can be easily viewed, are also housed in the original, inside casing. The spring driven mechanism plays 8 aires, (noted on the original music index, mounted under the interior lid), all on a 17 3/8-inch cylinder, located inside the case on the left side, and the original comb has all teeth, in tact. The tune indicator dial and start-stop-repeat/change switches are located to the right of the glass panel dust cover. These Music Boxes which had programs of 8, along with others having 10, or 12 selections on a single cylinder, translate to very complicated Musical arrangements and a superior tone quality. A Brémond Geneva sticker label attached to both the original music index, (bottom center) and the instruments instruction card, (right side compartment). The serial numbers 29481 are quill marked on the underside of the box. Signed with the makers logo of the time, the initials B. In a circle B. Brémond, which is stamped on a prominent part of the inner workings, located near the front, on the right side. There are also the numbers 190 01 stamped into the base fixture, located in the upper left corner of the workings. There are a few small areas of missing brass inlay, (see photos). The original key and the lock are in good, working condition. The comb is intact with no lost teeth. Areas of tarnish and dust are visible on the cylinders and metal works. It winds and runs, although it does not appear to have been serviced or cleaned for quite some time. Personally, I would have it cleaned and serviced by an expert. Glass panel has a small amount of glazing missing, located on the underside. Veneer finish is beautiful, with only minimal small marks and fine scratches consistent with age and use. It did appear to be slightly dry, so to preserve and protect the wood from drying any further, I applied a coat of Howard Feed-N-Wax Wood Polish & Conditioner. This was also to prevent any potential environmental damage, which in this case, would be changes in humidity, air quality, etc. Height Approximately 8 inches. Length – Approximately 31 inches. Depth – Approximately 12 inches. Weight- Approximately 40-45 lbs. I do not have a scale, so this is only a Best Guess and should be used only as a rough estimate. The box lid and interior dust cover lid both close evenly, and are in good, working order. To the best of my knowledge, the lock and key are both original and are in good, working order. Song indicator mechanism located under the glass panel is not accurate when telling which tune is playing. Not sure if it needs a replacement part or just an adjustment. At one time, there was a ribbon or tassel attached to the underside of the glass panel to lift and lower the glass safely. Will need to be replaced, very minimal cost. The original Music Index/Play List is included, which has significantly deteriorated over the years. Attempting to preserve the remnants, they were glued onto a piece of cardboard backing. The inner workings do not appear to have been touched or repaired by a non-professional, such as. The Helpful Uncle who claims he can fix anything mechanical, only to find he has forgotten how to put mechanism back in working order, with all the original parts/pieces. Or the Handy Husband, (notorious in the neighborhood for his countless incomplete projects in different stages of disrepair), who realizes only after dismantling said mechanism, he cannot finish and must make a trip to the hardware store, only to proclaim upon his return, Ill finish it tomorrow, I promise! (Proclamation #23, made 5 years, 7 months, and 3 days ago). Or projects by Busy Little Hands, to which credit of the work will remain unknown for at least 2 decades, or quite possibly be the Familys Unsolved Mystery for generations. All joking aside, we agree this is an incredible music box, with an amazing history and a true Masterpiece! It will fit with any style, but is perfect for a Victorian design style. If you have a particular fondness for this era, and antiques in general, we know you will fall in love!
