RARE & UNUSUAL ANIMATED CLOCK PAINTING We are pleased to offer one of the most unique musical specialty items ever to grace our collection. An oil-on-canvas painting, depicting a typical blacksmith’s shop of the day, with large, life-like animated figures superimposed over the painting. And, as is typical of such tableaux featuring Angelus chimes, there is a church in the scene, incorporating the clock. We have had musical paintings, some with clocks, before, but never with this combination of features. Large tableau with original frame, measuring 36″ wide x 31″ high x 9 deep. 8-tune Swiss music box, with 11.5 cylinder, and original tune card. 8-day clock, with silk-thread suspension, activating the music box on the hour. Weekly Angelus chimes (call to prayers) activated by a separate clock movement. The animation movements are quite large and fascinating to watch: two men forging a horseshoe on an anvil; an assistant pumping the bellows to stoke the furnace; a farrier shoeing a horse; the horse nodding his head and a small dog wagging his tail. The fine Swiss music box is in excellent condition, playing without any broken teeth or damper squeaks. Made in France and dating to about 1870, this is just about the most complex assemblage of components we have ever seen. The clock and Angelus movements may require a bit of adjustment after transport, but otherwise everything should work well “right out of the box”.
