This was crafted by F. Cattelin of Geneva Switzerland circa 1920. This also doubles as a jewelry box. Both the top and lower case components are hallmarked with the French Minerva number 2 stamp indicating solid silver of between. The inner bird box case has a hand engraved scene on the lid and the entire case is also solid silver – retains its original gold gilt as well. The original bird with bone beak is extremely colorful boasting iridescent red, gold, blue, green and violet hummingbird feathers. The solid silver case, excluding the mechanical movement, weighs 1 pound 6 ounces or 636 grams and measures approximately 6.5 x 5 x 2 inches. I fully serviced this bird box so everything works as it should. Cattelin boxes are some of the best and also rather uncommon. He is known for his fine casework yet he never signed any of his pieces. I can identify this as an F. Cattelin by the engineering design and mechanical components of the singing bird mechanical movement. It is amazing to find a 100 year old singing bird box in such outstanding condition. In summary, this is a fantastic antique singing bird box in amazing cosmetic and mechanical condition. I fully serviced (cleaned, adjusted, lubricated) the mechanical movement so this singing bird box operates perfectly. Buyers should be cautious when purchasing an antique singing bird box – always insist on seeing a photo of the mechanical movement for any singing bird box described as “antique”. This significantly impacts both current value and future value appreciation. The bird animates perfectly as follows: wings flap up/down, beak opens/closes, tail flutters up/down all the while singing to a beautiful oscillating bird song that is synchronized to the bird animation.
