This fabulous 4-comb music box was made by Charles Paillard of St. This is not a “cartel” music box, made with various components manufactured elsewhere, but a custom-designed, virtually one-off piece made by special order for a specific client. The unique and heavenly sound is a result of complex arrangements being played on the large 18 cylinder playing off four distinctly tuned combs, with a resulting sound seemingly comprising several diverse instruments playing simultaneously. The richly inlaid cabinetry, measures 31″ long x 12″ deep x 9 high (when closed), with ornate bronze handles, and a double-spring motor are indicative of what was made to be, and remains to this day, a top-of-the-line instrument seen only in the finest of homes.
