Stellas were premier products of the renowned Swiss maker, Mermod Freres, of St. Mermod also made cylinder music boxes (under their own brand name) and Mira disk music boxes. The distinguishing characteristic of Stellas was their unique, patented “projectionless” disk, and the equally unique comb design to play these disks. Only one of the double combs are visible to the casual observer. The second (“rear”) comb is positioned at a 90 degree vertical angle and is completely out of sight from above. Nonetheless, it adds to the musical tone and complexity in the same manner as a standard double-comb does on other music boxes. There is a speed controller and automatic shut-off feature at the end of a disk play. Serial #4968 is stamped on the bedplate, and the governor lid shows the last patent date of 1900. Very importantly, there are no broken teeth, a common problem with Stellas resulting from playing rusty disks and/or mishandling when changing the disks. The solid mahogany console, with various trim adornments, measures 30″ wide x 23″ deep x 30 high. It has a locking disk storage compartment. This plays size 17.5 disks, of which the one playing is included. The family we acquired this from unfortunately misplaced the other disks, but they may turn up.
