PVF (Paillard, Vaucher Fils) 8-tune, 93-tooth Cylinder Box. Box : 22.5″ long, 8 3/4″ deep, 5.5 high with veneer inlaid lid showing horn, flute, leaves and having 3 banding lines inlaid around design. Cylinder: 13″ long, 2.25″ diameter. Lever-wind movement with “repeat -change “and start -stop levers at right. Markings: No tune sheet. “46” and “93” stamped on left cylinder bracket; “93” alone on right one. The repeat change lever escutcheon is stamped “to change” at top; “to repeat” at the bottom. The start stop lever escutcheon is marked “to stop” at top, “PVF to Start” at the bottom. Box has black edged ogee edge lid, interior is black enamel. Has interior movement covering lid with glass insert. Lid has brass hold open folding bracket at right. The main carcass of the box is a “grained” black over brown softwood in excellent condition, as it is the lid. A few very minor repairs to the main box; the lid has been re-varnished. A high quality box in excellent condition. At one point cleaned and oiled. Of the eight tunes, only one, number five is recognizable: “My grandfather’s clock” , which was written in 1976. This box was probably made circa 1880. The “PVF” on the lever escutcheon meaus that this box was made by Paillard, Vaucher Fils, a Swiss company that was one of the best known of the 19th century.
