Antique Swiss Music Box 12 Tunes Pin Roller 6 Bells and Drum Henry Gautschi & Sons Philadelphia Swiss Movement 1880s. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! We have not come across such a beautiful music box as this in a while. The top, sides and bottom of the case are in very good condition. No warping, splits or repairs that we can ascertain. Beautiful Rosewood Case with an inlaid design on the top and front of this large case. The inlay design on the top is of two horns and other items. The front inlay design is of a flute and a mandolin. There is some inlay and veneer loss to the case. Look closely at the pics. The wood legs are still in place. The black enamel paint is in place with some loss where the wood is not left in its natural state. The underside board of the case does have a split in it. The glass in intact on the inner door over the movement, no cracking or blistering. The glass does have a wavy look to it when viewed from the side. The top is securely attached to the rest of the case by the hinges. The music box dates to the 1880s. The brass movement was made in Switzerland. The serial number on the card matches up with the serial number on the movement, which is “28440”. There is a tear in the music card that emanates from the left side. This music box plays 12 tunes or airs. The music box appears to have been well maintained over the years. The 13 long pin cylinder shows little loss of finish. There are approximately 61 teeth on the comb and all the teeth are in place. The wind mechanism of the movement works as expected and the wind spring feels sound when keyed. The catch ratchet securely holds a wind on the movement as well. The music box also has 5 decorative nickel plated bells and a drum that provide further realism to the music box sound. One of the strike hammers for the bells is not operating and needs reattaching or repair. The rest of the strike hammers on the bells and on the drum operate as expected. The two levers that allow the drums or bells to be turned off and just play the pin cylinder work as expected. The brass lock and decorative brass keyhole plate are still with the music box. There is no key. The case is in just amazing condition. No cracks, splits or missing pieces. The top of the case sits down evenly on the base and is firmly attached to the base by its’ hinges. No warping of the top going on with this music box which is a common malady that one comes across with these older boxes. So, very uncommon to find one in such great shape. The four legs are built into the sides of the case and all still look good. All the inside separator boards between the compartments are in place as well. The comb is in excellent condition. All the approximately 61 teeth are in place, and we see no past repairs to any of the teeth. The nickel plated finish on the comb shows some finish loss. The pin cylinder looks to be in very nice shape finish wise. Cannot say if any of the pins are bent or missing. The music box tunes sound great when the music box is played, so sounds like the pins are all hitting the comb teeth as expected. This music box can certainly can use some refurbishing both case and music movement wise. The stop and start selector button works on the music box, as does the replay/change selector. The music box case is 12-13/16″ tall, by 25-9/16″ across, by 15-1/16 wide. The brass pin roller is 13 across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
