If you’re an uncompromising collector of antique technology, make sure to check out all my listings after you look at this one. I don’t think you’ll find a better, broader or more balanced assortment of technical antiques anywhere — hundreds of listings each year, almost all of them featuring eye-popping “gee whiz” gadgetry in exceptional original condition. Here’s a large, exquisite disc music box manufactured by Symphonion in the early 1890’s. The music box plays 13 5/8 Symphonion discs, ten of which are included with it. The instrument’s musical movement is housed in an early and ornate Symphonion cabinet whose burl walnut top and sides will most assuredly make it the focal point of any room in which is placed. Condition is excellent, and the music box still plays beautifully (see the video I’ve posted with the pictures). Cabinet finish is original, turned wood corners are undamaged, and the burl wood patterns are almost mesmerizing in their intensity. Unlike later disc music boxes, whose spring motors are wound with a crank, this early instrument’s motor is wound with a lever located on the lower face of the cabinet. Brass fittings are original and undamaged. The label on the underside of the lid is original and nearly perfect. The unique Symphonion “sublime harmonie” double-comb mechanism is likewise in excellent condition, with no rust. No corrosion, no missing or broken teeth. The governor is working properly, as you can hear when you watch the video. Overall, a wonderfully maintained 130+ year old music box, and I’m confident the new owner will be pleased. With the lid lowered, the cabinet measures 22″ x 19″ x 11. Sure, you can probably get a lower price from Joe and Janet Barn-Find, but when your “bargain” arrives broken, and without any hint of how it works or how you might be able to put it back together, you’ll realize that you really do get exactly what you pay for.
