Spectacular Nicole Freres Music Box Rare 2-per-turn 12 Tune Format
NICOLE FRERES MUSIC BOX. This very rare and unique music box has been in our private collection for many years. Made in Switzerland, c. 1862, by the renowned Nicole Freres, considered by experts to have been the finest makers of all. Please note, that by checking the Serial # 38450 with reference books, we can determine without question that this is a genuine Nicole music box, made prior to the sale of their company and move to England around 1880. The 12″ x 3″ “fat cylinder” plays on a two-per-turn format, thus allowing the comb tooth spacing to remain tight. Regular 12-tune music boxes require wide tooth spacing, making for less teeth and poorer sound quality. Nicole would stand for none of that, as their #1 priority was quality, quality, quality. Each of the comb teeth is in perfect condition, none having been replaced, and each with a proper and functioning damper, so their are no squeaks or other extraneous noises. The comb, as you can see in the pictures, is signed “Nicole Freres”. The wood casing, with extensive top inlay, measures 20″ long x 10″ deep x 7.5 high (when closed). It, too, is in remarkable, almost like-new, condition. The bottom bears the serial # 38450 as well. The controls on the right are a typical Nicole format, with the upper lever being change/repeat, the middle stop/start, and the lower one “instant stop”. The lever-wind spring, on the left, was first introduced around 1860 and became the standard for all cylinder music boxes after that, replacing the previously used winding key. This features an original tune card, showing the names of the 12 songs, the most familiar of which might be “The Old Folks At Home” (known colloquially as “Swanee River”) by Stephen Foster.
