Gilt Enameled & Jeweled. In form of a Rococo Grand Piano. This charming and exquisitely crafted music box made in the shape of an eighteenth-century grand piano, lavishly and elaborately decorated in the Rococo style – with floral vignettes, natural pearls and glass cabochons in gilded settings. There are several complicated techniques used to create the luxurious decoration – enamel, engraving, and gilding. His piece is one of the rarest of his works using the finest materials including real pearls, sterling silver and cabochon amethyst. Opening the keyboard cover activates the music-playing mechanism, and a gentle pastoral melody begins to sound. Numerous movable functional elements give it even more grace. The no-removable winding key at the bottom of the grand piano is marked REUGE. This well-preserved music box is in excellent working condition. Reuge music boxes are famous for their classical antique and vintage looks. Handcrafted with mechanical precision, these custom musical instruments are a labor of love. In 1865, Charles Reuge settled in Switzerland to make musical pocket watches. Over the years, with the help of family members and investors, Reuge developed into a mechanically advanced company while still preserving its traditional values and designs. Somehow, the company survived through the war and subsequent economic crisis and built the Reuge Factory in 1930, which is still in operation today.
