This is a “Corona Del Mar Quail Music Box” serial #QB (Quail Box)/128/A (Alder Wood) produced by The Gazo Family Clock Factory of San Diego, California, circa 1980 (serial number is stamped on the bottom of the box). The cabinet pieces were hand carved in Mexico from Alder wood & finished in English walnut by Beto Martinez of Creations International and hand assembled in San Diego, California by The Gazo Family Clock Factory. Due to the hand carving and hand assembly, no 2 of these models are alike. During assembly of the cabinet, The Gazo Family Clock Factory installed a Swiss made Reuge 3 tune 72 note changing musical mechanism (CH 372604, dated 12/1979). The Reuge musical mechanism has a larger than usual mainspring allowing for almost 11 full minutes of continuous play before the musical mechanism needs to be wound again, and also features a tune indicator which indicates which tune is being played. The stopper button is pushed to the right to activate playing of the musical mechanism, and when the stopper button is pushed to the left the musical mechanism will finish it’s revolution of the current tune and then shut off. The musical mechanism is mounted under protective glass and has a winding key located on the bottom of the cabinet. This music box was recently acquired from the estate of Linda Pinson (original owner), who with her husband Ray ran “Ray & Linda’s Clock Repair” in Tustin, California. The box was acquired from the estate by Don Caine, owner of Music Box Repair Center Unlimited, and former warehouse & operations manager of Sorrento Specialties and later Reuge USA.
