Beautiful antique Ward-Stilson Co. 9584, manufactured in Anderson, Indiana and dating to the early 20th century, likely circa 1910s-1920s. This unusual mechanical harp contains a wind-up music-box mechanism. It is working: after winding, moving the control lever starts the music and moving it back stops it. It will play for several minutes from a winding. The dark wood body features an elegant gilt-tone foliate decoration on the front and the original interior paper label reading AUTOMATIC HARP No. 9584 – Manuf’d by The Ward-Stilson Co. Patent Applied For. The back, sides and base present very nicely for its age. The front has age-related wear including some scuffing and areas of milky white finish haze/clouding, particularly around the decorative area and upper portion. Despite its age, the musical mechanism still plays, which gives this piece tremendous character.
