Antique German Brass Singing Bird Cage Music Box Automaton Karl Griesbaum NR. Offered here is a beautiful antique German brass singing bird cage music box automaton, believed to have been manufactured in the late 19th century and attributed to the renowned workshop of Karl Griesbaum. These remarkable mechanical creations were handcrafted in Germany and are highly sought after for their intricate engineering and charming animated displays. Housed within an elegant brass birdcage, the feathered songbird is perched on a decorative branch adorned with foliage and berries. When activated, the internal mechanism causes the bird to animate and perform while accompanied by music. Pieces of this type were luxury novelty items of their era and remain prized by collectors of antique music boxes, automatons, and fine mechanical curiosities. This example was discovered at a local estate sale and remains in largely original, untouched condition. The winding key turns and the mechanism engages enough to produce slight movement from the bird, indicating that at least part of the mechanism is functioning (see video). However, the automaton is not fully operational, and because of the delicate and highly intricate nature of these antique movements, I have elected not to disassemble or attempt any repairs. It is being offered exactly as found so that the next owner or collector may decide whether to preserve, display, or professionally restore it. Cosmetically, the piece presents very well for its age. It retains a lovely antique patina with only expected signs of age and use. One small screw is missing from the base, and the bird appears to be missing a small feather or two around the crest/head area. The brass cage, decorative top finial, and overall structure remain attractive and display beautifully.
