What an absolute marvel! With a slide of the lever, a beautiful little bird pops up from its nest and sings a cheerful song. While the bird chirps, its beak moves in sync, it flits its wings, and it pivots back and forth. Then, just as suddenly as it appeared, the little bird ducks back into its nest and the cover closes. This is a vintage Griesbaum model #10 singing bird box musical automaton. It was made in Germany in the 1950’s. The golden gilt brass case is exquisite and is in pristine condition. Included with this automation are: a vintage Griesbaum bird winding key, a new (spare) brass winding key, a velveteen protective pouch, a polishing cloth, and instructions. The singing bird movement was invented in the late 18th century by Jaquet-Droz in La-Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland. It is made up of a leather bellows and piston whistle assembly that creates birdsong and has more than 200 parts! The box is robust, but it is important not to push down the oval lid while the bird is singing. It will go down automatically at the end of the song. If the bird stops in mid-song, gently wind the key, and it will go down on its own. DIMENSIONS: 4-1/4″ wide x 3″ length x 2 tall. Because this is not my expertise, I had the bird box serviced.
