Extremely Early Thorens 4 Tune Cylinder Music Box Ca. 1880
I took it upon myself to fix the item, and it plays beautifully! This is a very early music box, with patent dates on nearly every part of the machine from 1881 onward! The main spring is now functional, and it winds properly, as well as does its job to turn the cylinder. The comb is absolutely perfect, in that it is very clean and has no spots from wear or surface rust. The serial number on the comb is 4. There is also a horizontal flywheel, which is very unusual for cylinder music boxes. The case is made of solid burled walnut, with ebonized corners. The top of the lid has Thorenss emblem in solid sterling silver. The emblem is embedded in more burled walnut, with an ebonized frame. There is also a sterling silver rim. Some of the nails to hold in the rim are missing. They are sterling silver nails. Box plays perfectly, but does not close. Cylinder has to be pushed back manually after all four tunes are played. This item would make a great candidate for for the restoration for this item would make a great candidate for further restoration, even though it does work near-perfectly.
