“GRAND FORMAT” OVERTURE MUSIC BOX. ” BEYOND BEAUTIFUL, AESTHETICALLY AND MUSICALLY “. A fantastic, rare and simply put, wonderful, music box. When you want “THE BEST”, look no further. This is the Holy Grail of music boxes. Made in 1865 by what experts consider to be the best maker, Nicole Freres. The 17″ x 4″ cylinder plays four long and complex overture selections from the operas Semiramide, Freischutz, Magic Flute and William Tell. Each selection is over two (2) minutes in duration. The original, engraved tune sheet is present, as is the lock and key. Overall case dimensions are 29″ x 11″ x 9. The casework is a work of art unto itself, with extensive brass and wood inlays, in addition to 152 pieces of mother-of-pearl on the lid. When we acquired this fine piece about 10 years ago, it was in what most music box aficionados considered to be in fine condition. This was not good enough for us, so we sent it back to it’s original birthplace in Switzerland with carte-blanche instructions to make it “like new”. The restoration was done in two locations, with the movement restored by Michele Bourgoz at the world-famous Baud Museum in L’Auberson, and the casework done by Monsieur Denis Margot, whose atelier workshop is nearby. These two gentlemen are absolute perfectionists and when finished, it is safe to say the music box was as good as, or perhaps better, than when new 150 years ago, due to the state-of-the-art tuning equipment designed and employed by Monsieur Bourgoz for just such restoration work. We’ve had this in our home for the past 10 years, enjoyed it immensely, and played it numerous times not only for our own pleasure but that of our guests and clients from all over the world.
