A truly special and spectacular music box by the renowned firm of Mermod Freres, of St. If you are familiar with this company and it’s offerings, you know that they also made the Mira and Stella line of disk music boxes. Their history, dating back many generations, started with the manufacture of fine watches, then into cylinder music boxes. Later on in the 19th century, when disk boxes were invented, they were viewed as an existential threat to cylinder music boxes, due to their louder sound and seemingly infinite variety of music availability. The end result were perhaps some of the best-sounding cylinder music boxes ever made, and ones that a customer could keep adding cylinders to his music library. This particular example is known as a “Sublime Harmonie Piccolo”, playing large 18″ long x 2.5″ diameter nickel-plated cylinders. Fitted with a “Jacot’s Safety Check” (to prevent cylinder runs), speed control, tune selector, change/repeat mechanism and “zither” for tone moderation, this is about as good as they get. It was professionally restored and tuned and sounds just great. Here’s a video for your listening pleasure. The solid mahogany case measures 37″ wide x 16″ deep x 12: high (when closed) and 27 high (opened). It features extensive hand-carvings on the front, and is in wonderful condition. The original lock and key is present, and the extra cylinders fit nicely in the built-in drawer below the music section. The tune cards are replacements.
